Upgrading the portals just give more chests. It's nice when you still have a lot to unlock, but after that the chests seem unnecessary. Even level 10 dragons only get you chests. Opened up the game and get a message that the portals (those immovable, annoying things) are active. You tap them to summon a dragon, and you get a reward of chests.
